A court in Qatar has decided to commute the death sentences of eight former Indian naval officers, as confirmed by India's foreign ministry. The statement did not specify the revised penalties or the charges against the individuals. However, reports from sources, including FT and Reuters, suggest that the men were accused of espionage on behalf of Israel. The Israeli embassy in India declined to comment on the matter, emphasizing that it was "not an Israeli matter."

In October, India expressed deep shock after the eight men were initially sentenced to death. The specific charges against them have not been publicly disclosed, contributing to limited confirmed information about the case. The arrested individuals were reported to be former personnel of the Indian Navy, associated with a private company named Al Dahra. While the Indian government officially described them as "ex-servicemen," the families and local media confirmed their naval background.

The families of the incarcerated officers plan to appeal the sentences in Qatar's top court, according to the Indian Express newspaper. The court's order has not been made public, maintaining a level of confidentiality around the proceedings. In early December, India's ambassador to Qatar visited the detained men in prison.

India's foreign ministry stated that its ambassador and officials were present in the Court of Appeal of Qatar during the recent hearing, awaiting the detailed judgment. The ministry remains in close contact with the legal team and the families to determine the next steps in response to the commuting of the death sentences.
