A US Air Force man burns to death outside the Israeli embassy in Washington
An active-duty US Air Force member, Aaron Bushnell, tragically dies after setting himself ablaze outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, protesting the Gaza war and declaring his refusal to be complicit in genocide.
An active-duty member of the US Air Force, Aaron Bushnell, tragically passed away after a shocking act of self-immolation outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington. Bushnell, 25, hailing from San Antonio, Texas, succumbed to his injuries, as confirmed by the Metropolitan Police Department.
Witnesses reported that Bushnell approached the embassy around 1 pm on Sunday, initiating a livestream on Twitch, a popular video streaming platform. Clad in military fatigues, he vocally denounced his complicity in what he termed "genocide" in Gaza before igniting himself, shouting "Free Palestine!" until he fell. Although the video was swiftly removed from Twitch, law enforcement managed to obtain and review a copy.
The Air Force released a statement on Monday, expressing condolences and confirming Bushnell's demise, pending notification of his next of kin.
The incident occurred amid Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's push for a military operation in Rafah, Gaza, amidst ongoing ceasefire negotiations. Criticisms have mounted against Israel's offensive in Gaza, with accusations of genocide against Palestinians.
This tragic event echoes a similar act in December, where an individual self-immolated outside the Israeli consulate in Atlanta, employing gasoline as an accelerant, alongside a Palestinian flag, in what was deemed an extreme political protest.
