The French coastguard has confirmed the loss of one life and the disappearance of two individuals following a small boat incident in the Channel.
In a statement, the organization reported that the French navy conducted four rescue operations on Wednesday, deploying boats and a helicopter to aid approximately 180 individuals. Despite their efforts, one rescued person could not be revived, and two others remain unaccounted for. A spokesperson for the UK Home Office acknowledged the incident, deferring to French authorities for the lead in response and investigation.
Statistics from the Home Office indicate that within the past week, 290 individuals have undertaken the perilous crossing, bringing this year's total to 2,006 people.
Enver Solomon, Chief Executive of the Refugee Council, expressed condolences to the affected families and appreciation for those who responded to the distress call. He deemed the incident another preventable tragedy, urging the government to reconsider its strategy regarding small boat crossings, specifically mentioning the need to abandon the Rwanda plan. Solomon emphasized the necessity for a comprehensive plan to offer refuge to those escaping persecution, violence, and torture, proposing measures such as expanding family reunion options, introducing refugee visas, and establishing agreements with the French government to ensure fair treatment and dignity for migrants.
