Five Accused as NSW police stop suspected kidnapping plan and discover $1 billion cocaine stash
Police in Sydney won a significant drug bust Friday night after foiling a suspected kidnapping attempt that resulted in the discovery of 722 kilos of cocaine hidden in an apartment.
While calling the circumstances that resulted in the arrest of five individuals "incredible," police stated that the $1 billion worth of cocaine was "one of the biggest single seizures" in NSW history and that it did not entail stopping a smuggling operation at the border.
Yesterday morning, just before 7 am, a regular break-and-enter phone call set off a chain reaction that resulted in police swarming a residential unit block in Ryde, a neighborhood in the northwest of Sydney. They found a scenario reminiscent of a Guy Ritchie movie in an underground parking lot: four males purportedly seated in a Toyota Yaris with all-black outfits and facial covers.
During a search of the guys and the little car, police are said to have discovered many objects, including gloves, a meat cleaver, a box cutter, a flashing light bar, a 60-cm crowbar, and zip ties, that may have been part of a kidnapping operation.
An alleged "kidnapping kit" was what Detective Superintendent Joseph Doueihi called the equipment. The males, who ranged in age from 19 to 25, were taken into custody by the police and accused of many crimes. After witnessing the gang reportedly forcing their way into the subterranean parking lot, a resident of the block reported the group to the authorities.
According to Detective Doueihi, the four were "known to police".
Following their interrogation of the males, police determined who the purported abductee was, and at 10.45 p.m., they moved quickly to carry out a search warrant at the same residential neighborhood where the Yaris had been parked.
A 24-year-old Melbourne man attempted to flee by jumping over a balcony when police knocked on his door, but they grabbed him and took him into custody, according to Detective Doueihi. The guy had leased the two-bedroom apartment through Airbnb for three weeks when police allegedly discovered 722 kg of cocaine inside, which is estimated to be worth over $1 billion on the black market.
Numerous enormous black sports bags reportedly "filled with one-kilo blocks of cocaine" were recovered by police, according to Detective Doueihi. According to reports, cops discovered "hundreds of kilos of cocaine" stacked high inside bedroom closets. Detective Doueihi stated, "The seizure of that quantity of drugs is unseen." He also mentioned that the stamps and markings on the one-kilogram blocks suggested the cocaine was probably brought in illegally from South America, most likely from Colombia.
"Not only have we seized that (cocaine) ... we have prevented a potential kidnapping." The Melbourne guy, whom the police did not know, was taken into custody and charged with dealing with the proceeds of crime and selling a commercial amount of illegal substances. According to Detective Doueihi, the four masked individuals showed up to rob the cocaine and take the man from the Airbnb apartment.
He stated that opposing criminal organizations had targeted drug traffickers to take drugs and money and that NSW Police had made 48 arrests for abduction this year. Today is the five men's court appearance at Burwood Local Court, where the police will claim that the four men entered the unit complex with the intention of robbing and kidnapping.
