Taking charge of his third term as the Chief Minister of Sindh, Murad Ali Shah wasted no time in addressing the alarming surge in street crime in Karachi. During a recent meeting chaired by the CM to assess the law and order situation, Inspector General of Police Riffat Mukhtar revealed staggering statistics: 23 citizens fell victim to armed robbers in the city during January and February alone.
The meeting delved into the specifics of street crime, highlighting the brazenness of criminals who snatched 3,953 mobile phones at gunpoint and made off with 46 cars and 1,537 motorbikes in just two months. Shockingly, incidents were concentrated within the jurisdiction of 22 out of Karachi's 108 police stations.
In response, CM Shah instructed Karachi's police chief Khadim Rind to mobilize all Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs) for evening patrols, recognizing that most street crimes occur under the cover of darkness. Moreover, he called for a doubling of police personnel at city police stations, aiming to bolster law enforcement presence and efficiency.
Acknowledging the 25,000 vacant police positions statewide, CM Shah emphasized merit-based recruitment to fortify investigative capabilities and curb criminal impunity. He also restricted the use of strobe lights to authorized law enforcement vehicles and vowed action against unauthorized displays of weapons by private security personnel.
Additionally, CM Shah prioritized the long-awaited Karachi Safe City project, stressing the urgency of enhancing security measures to safeguard the city's residents. Addressing the scourge of criminal gangs in riverine areas, he proposed a collaborative strategy with neighboring provinces once a new government is established in Balochistan.
In a bid to revamp dilapidated police infrastructure, CM Shah allocated Rs2 billion for the renovation of 708 police stations across Sindh, including those in Karachi. He commended the Rangers for their targeted operations against drug cartels, terrorists, and street criminals, expressing confidence in their efforts to restore order in vulnerable areas.
With ongoing initiatives and a commitment to effective law enforcement, CM Murad Ali Shah aims to restore peace and security to the streets of Sindh.
