Dubai has unveiled a bold aim to cut carbon emissions by 50% by 2030

Dubai has unveiled an ambitious plan to achieve carbon neutrality, targeting a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 as part of its broader roadmap toward net zero by 2050. The announcement aligns with Dubai's commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action, reflecting the city's dedication to achieving a more sustainable future.

His Excellency Abdulla Mohammed Al Basti, Secretary General of The Executive Council of Dubai, emphasized the city's commitment to collaboration with global cities sharing similar sustainability visions. The initiative, coinciding with the UAE's hosting of COP28, underscores Dubai's dedication to environmental protection, resource conservation, biodiversity, increased renewable energy adoption, and the advancement of a green and circular economy.

His Excellency Ahmad Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, highlighted the city's successful transformation in the energy sector, marked by a market-based strategy and public-private partnerships (PPPs). This approach has facilitated the development of a robust clean energy portfolio and addressed the growing infrastructure demands of the city.

Mark Watts, Executive Director of C40, commended Dubai's commitment to climate action, particularly in aligning its climate action plan with the Paris Agreement's goals. The plan, the first in the Middle East to do so, outlines a citywide target and sectoral pathways for reducing emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2018 levels.

Dubai has actively pursued partnerships with regional and international organizations in clean energy, establishing green funding mechanisms, managing risks, and enhancing local capabilities. This collaborative approach has attracted clean energy investors, creating a market for renewable technologies and leading to the development of significant clean power projects. Notable achievements include the world's largest single-site solar power park, the region's first hydropower plant, a green hydrogen facility, a waste-to-energy plant, and the production of green aluminum.
