Al Mulla Plaza stores in Dubai shuttered when a section of the mall collapsed

On Sunday, shops at Al Mulla Plaza remained shuttered after a section of the shopping mall collapsed the previous evening, resulting in two individuals sustaining minor injuries.

As one of the oldest shopping centers in Dubai, Al Mulla Plaza comprises retail outlets with an apartment block above them. Fortunately, the apartments were unaffected, and tenants were permitted to access their homes. Dubai Police have cordoned off the retail shops as they investigate the incident.

When Khaleej Times visited the plaza on Sunday, many shoppers were unaware of the mishap, having arrived at the mall as usual. Access was restricted, and officials were seen examining the structure located on Al Ittihad Road. A security guard at the landmark informed visitors that they would need to return in a few days as authorities ensured safety protocols.

Al Mulla Plaza, a renowned mixed-use center housing 108 duplexes and 60 retail outlets, remains a popular landmark in Dubai. Despite the incident, some residents expressed calm, emphasizing that the collapsed section involved only the plastering of the roof. While a family opted to stay in a hotel for a day, overall, residents reported that the situation was under control.

I. John, a long-time resident, stated, "There is no concern as such among residents." Residents of the apartment block continue to have access to a back-door entry.

Another resident, MS, who moved to the building around two years ago, mentioned that despite learning about the incident upon returning home the previous evening, residents remained calm and continued with their routines. The Government of Dubai Media Office reported on Sunday that swift action was taken by authorities to manage the situation caused by the collapse, attributing the incident to the improper storage of heavy materials. Two people suffered minor injuries, and government departments responded promptly to ensure the safety of all individuals at the site.
