Saudi Arabia: The Prophet's Mosque uses thirty tons of perfume every day.
At the holy site, more than 600 pieces of equipment are in use for floor washing and sterilization.
Saudi authorities employ 115 tonnes of rug sterilization substances and 30 tonnes (30,000 liters) of perfume daily at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, the second holiest site in Islam, according to Fawzi Al Hujaili, Deputy Chief of the General Authority for Care of the Two Holy Mosques for Services. The mosque in Medina is a significant destination for Muslims worldwide, and the daily programs include rigorous sterilization and disinfection measures.
Al Hujaili revealed that 30 tonnes of perfume are used daily for scenting the mosque, while 115 tonnes are dedicated to sterilizing rugs and 110 tonnes for disinfecting the floors. The extensive equipment employed for disinfection, sterilization, and floor washing comprises over 600 devices, each operated by well-trained workers, he added.
After performing Umrah at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, many pilgrims visit the Prophet’s Mosque to pray and visit Al Rawda Al Sharifa, where the tomb of the Prophet Mohammad (Peace Be Upon Him) is situated. The Prophet's Mosque witnessed around 5.2 million Muslims offering prayers in one week, as per official figures released last month. Saudi Arabia anticipates approximately 10 million Muslims from abroad to perform Umrah during the ongoing season that began over six months ago.
In April of the previous year, Saudi authorities unveiled a gilded brass barrier surrounding the Sacred Chamber at the Prophet’s Mosque. The barrier, replacing a wooden one, aimed to preserve the visual identity and architectural pattern of the mosque. It is designed to remain immovable under pressure, with posts fixed to the bottom base using internal props.
