The Jebel Ali Hindu Temple marked the commencement of the New Year by welcoming an impressive congregation of 40,000 devotees, signaling a notable upswing in community engagement for spiritual practices.
Mohan Narasimhamurthy, the General Manager of Hindu Temple Dubai in Jebel Ali, shared insights into the remarkable surge, highlighting a substantial increase of 12,000 attendees compared to the previous year.
"Last year, our doors embraced around 28,000 to 29,000 individuals. This year witnessed a significant surge in devotion, with an additional 10,000 to 12,000 people joining our spiritual festivities. It was indeed a triumphant day as we meticulously ensured the satisfaction of all devotees," explained Narasimhamurthy.
Efforts were made to streamline the influx of devotees, with distinct queues for bachelors, families, and a special family queue catering to individuals aged 80 and above, persons with disabilities (PODs), pregnant women, and mothers with infants. The temple successfully managed a consistent flow of 1,800-2,000 people per hour throughout the day.
Narasimhamurthy emphasized the role of volunteers in handling the increased footfall, mentioning designated holding areas within the premises for family queues to enhance comfort while waiting. He underscored the top priority placed on safety during these gatherings.
On the significance of such days, he remarked, “Throughout the year, we observe four to five major occasions, including January 1. The UAE National Day, a public holiday, attracts a considerable number of devotees. On regular weekdays, the temple witnesses an average of 3,000 to 4,000 worshippers, escalating to approximately 6,000 on Saturdays, 8,000 on Sundays, and peaking at an average of 12,000 attendees on weekends.”
Addressing the temple's relocation from Bur Dubai to Jebel Ali, Narasimhamurthy acknowledged the emotional impact on the community. However, many devotees at the new site expressed appreciation for the move, citing challenges related to parking and crowd management at the previous location.
Devotees like Gokul Raman and Seema Bhatia lauded the new temple's beauty, space, and ornate features. Raman shared his tradition of visiting the temple on special occasions, while Bhatia, a resident of the UAE for 17 years, praised the government for providing a spacious and magnificent place for worship.
Even as the community experienced emotions about the temple's relocation, individuals like driver Gurpreet Singh, visiting the Gurudwara next door, showcased the enduring appeal of the new temple. Singh brought his friend, who was eager to witness the temple despite its inauguration in October 2022, emphasizing the strong community bonds and the allure of the new spiritual center.
