Tasmania has experienced its largest-ever drug bust, with authorities confiscating over $4 million worth of illegal drugs. The seizure, which included three kilograms of methylamphetamine and four kilograms of cocaine, occurred at Rocky Cape in northwest Tasmania. The breakthrough came after law enforcement intercepted a car and boat traveling from Victoria to Tasmania on December 7.

In connection with the operation, two men from New South Wales were apprehended—a 34-year-old from Elderslide and a 40-year-old from Swansea. Alongside the significant drug haul, a .22 pistol and ammunition were allegedly discovered in their possession. The combined street value of the seized drugs is estimated to be $4.6 million.

The authorities seized both the car and boat used by the individuals, along with a trailer valued at over $25,000. Southern District Commander Jason Elmer emphasized the magnitude of the operation, stating that it represents the largest-ever confiscation of methylamphetamine and cocaine in Tasmania. He highlighted the positive impact such seizures have on reducing harm within the community, equivalent to preventing approximately 30,000 street deals of methylamphetamine and 4,000 street deals of cocaine.

Acknowledging the detrimental effects of illicit drugs on the community, Commander Elmer expressed the police force's commitment to thwarting the importation and distribution of such substances. Both arrested men face charges related to trafficking a controlled substance and firearm offenses. They have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear in Hobart Magistrates Court. This significant drug bust follows a related incident last month in which two kilograms of cocaine and four kilograms of methylamphetamine were seized from a vehicle in Devonport.
