A sperm whale found beached in Western Australia has sadly died, as confirmed by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA). The 15-meter-long whale, which was stranded on a sandbar in Rockingham after being hit by a boat, passed away at 6:30 am today. Efforts were made by authorities, including closing Rockingham Beach and attempting to move the whale to safety, but the operation faced challenges.

The whale was initially spotted at Port Beach on Saturday, later moving to Coogee before becoming stranded near the Rockingham foreshore. Despite collaborative attempts involving various agencies and experts, including marine scientists from Perth Zoo, Fisheries WA, the City of Rockhampton, and the DBCA Parks and Wildlife Service, the condition of the whale deteriorated.

Dr. Kelly Waples, a marine mammal expert with DBCA, expressed concern about the whale's proximity to shore and its poor condition. Weighing over 30 tonnes, the animal faced significant challenges with its internal organs due to the absence of full support from seawater.

The DBCA thanked everyone involved in the incident and highlighted that the next stage of the operation would focus on removing the carcass from the water. The beach closure and collaborative efforts aimed to ensure the safety of both the public and the whales during the challenging situation.
