Emirati environmentalists released an app to monitor carbon emissions in the public

An innovative Emirati, who was part of a UAE program shaping the nation's leaders of tomorrow, has secured government support for a green project aimed at reducing the public's carbon footprint.

The UAE Environmental Identity app, conceptualized by National Experts Programme fellow Abdulla Al Remeithi, seeks to assist residents in making more sustainable choices for the benefit of the planet. Launched by the National Experts Programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, the app will be linked to the UAE Pass online platform. It will monitor day-to-day activities generating greenhouse gases, allowing users to assess their environmental impact and adopt greener behaviors.

Abdulla Al Remeithi, the director for environmental policy, regulation, and climate change at the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi and a sustainability ambassador for the UAE, stated, “We will be calculating the personal carbon footprint of every individual – their water consumption, electricity consumption, and carbon dioxide emissions of their vehicles. This will manage emissions and support projects that reduce carbon footprint.”

The app aims to introduce incentives for reducing water, gas, and energy consumption in the form of green points. Users will receive rewards for reducing their carbon footprint, redeemable through various loyalty programs when the application is fully rolled out.

Abdulla Al Remeithi developed the concept during his participation in the National Experts Programme, initiated in January 2019 to leverage the country's existing knowledge base to support the next generation of decision-makers.

Early sign-up for the online platform is available on the project's website. The Cop28 conference, where the app was unveiled, is focused on securing an international agreement on key issues such as limiting global warming and phasing out or reducing fossil fuels. The conference is set to conclude on Tuesday.
