In a poignant display of solidarity with the people of Gaza, Sharjah Police announced on Tuesday the prohibition of New Year's Eve celebrations and fireworks displays. The directive, issued through social media, emphasizes the importance of compliance, warning of legal consequences for individuals and organizations found violating the ban.

The decision comes amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where more than 20,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the outbreak of war on October 7. The UAE leadership has consistently advocated for a permanent ceasefire to safeguard civilian lives.

The General Command of Sharjah Police, in its social media announcement, described the move as a "sincere expression of solidarity and human cooperation with the people in the Gaza Strip." Notably, spectacular firework shows are a traditional highlight of New Year's Eve festivities across the UAE, including in Sharjah.

Al Majaz Waterfront, a prominent venue for such celebrations, recently confirmed the cancellation of its annual New Year's Eve display, as a gesture of respect for the lives lost in the besieged enclave. The decision aligns with the broader sentiment in the UAE to express empathy and support for those affected by the conflict.

During the early weeks of the war, various live events and concerts in the Emirates were canceled or postponed. Notable cancellations included the Tanweer Sacred Hearts Festival in Sharjah, the Culture Summit Abu Dhabi, and concerts at Dubai's Coca-Cola Arena, featuring the debut performance of award-winning American singer-songwriter Khalid and American rapper Macklemore. These decisions underscore the region's commitment to prioritizing humanitarian concerns and acknowledging the gravity of the situation in Gaza.
