Over the Dowry demand by boyfriend, girl committed suicide

The suicide death of a 26-year-old doctor in Kerala, India, has drawn attention to the possible involvement of dowry demands in her untimely demise. On December 5, Shahana, a postgraduate student at Thiruvananthapuram Medical College, was discovered dead in her leased residence. According to India Today, this occurred when her fiance decided to call off their wedding since her family couldn't afford the dowry. According to Shahana's family, her boyfriend—a physician who also serves as a spokesperson for the Medical PG Doctors Association—demanded a sizeable dowry that included jewelry, real estate, and an expensive BMW vehicle. Shahana's family said that her fiancé broke up with her because she couldn't meet these expectations, which caused her to become distressed and maybe lead to her suicide. The partner of the accused, Dr. Ruwise, was taken into custody by the Medical College Police on Wednesday night after they filed an unnatural death report. Kerala Health Minister Veena George has directed the Department of Women and Child Development to carry out an exhaustive inquiry and provide a report in response to the occurrence. Sathidevi, the chair of the Kerala Women's Committee, visited Shahana's mother and demanded a probe, saying the committee would request a report on the police's involvement in the case. She threatened to file a lawsuit under the Prevention of Dowry Act if it was shown that the victim was subjected to dowry demands from the accused doctor's family. Based on media reports, the state Minority Commission has opened a case about the event. The Medical PG Doctors Association has removed the accused physician from all roles within their organization in response to the claims.
