A recent study has uncovered a fascinating revelation about the ability of human tears to mitigate aggression, particularly in men. Conducted by the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel and published in the scientific journal PLOS Biology, the research delved into the chemical signals present in tears and their impact on curbing aggressive tendencies. Building on prior studies demonstrating that rodents use tears as social signals, this investigation specifically focused on the influence of tears from female volunteers on male aggression.

Led by PhD student Shani Agron, the study involved exposing 25 male volunteers to "emotional" tears obtained from female donors who had watched sad films. Remarkably, although these tears were odorless and indistinguishable from saline, they exerted a significant influence on the participants' aggressive behavior.

The results revealed a noteworthy 43.7 percent decrease in hostile and vengeance-seeking behavior in men after inhaling these tears. This aligns with earlier research indicating that tears can lower testosterone levels in men, subsequently impacting aggressive tendencies.

Unlike rodents, humans lack a dedicated organ in their noses for detecting these scentless chemical signals. To unravel the mechanism behind this phenomenon, researchers applied tears to various olfactory receptors, identifying four receptors exclusively activated by tears, not saline. Furthermore, brain imaging through MRI scanners demonstrated reduced activity in brain regions associated with aggression when participants were provoked during a computer game following exposure to tears.

The study posits that human tears may emit signals subconsciously deterring aggression. The authors speculate that this phenomenon could have evolutionary roots, serving as a vital communication tool, particularly when verbal communication is impractical, as seen in the case of infants.
