Pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai, a key figure in Hong Kong's political landscape, has entered a not-guilty plea as his trial resumes. The 76-year-old faces life imprisonment on charges of threatening national security and colluding with foreign forces. Lai's case is a focal point for international concern and serves as a litmus test for Hong Kong's judicial independence. The trial, which commenced on December 18 after a year-long delay, is expected to extend over 80 days.
Lai, a UK citizen, has been in solitary confinement since December 2020, arrested for fraud and involvement in protests. His arrest and subsequent charges have drawn global attention, with British Foreign Secretary David Cameron advocating for his release. Lai is the highest-profile individual charged under the Beijing-backed National Security Law (NSL), widely criticized for suppressing dissent.
A staunch pro-democracy advocate, Lai founded the now-closed Apple Daily newspaper and actively participated in Hong Kong's pro-democracy movements, from the 2014 Umbrella Movement to protests against a Beijing-backed extradition bill in 2019. Over 250 activists, lawmakers, and protesters have been detained under NSL and sedition charges.
The NSL, introduced in 2020 amid significant pro-democracy protests, is justified by Beijing as necessary for maintaining order. Lai has been branded a traitor seeking to undermine China's security. Born in Guangzhou, China, in 1947, Lai escaped to Hong Kong at 12, shaping a remarkable journey from a garment sweatshop worker to a global apparel brand founder. His pivot to political activism and media was catalyzed by the 1989 Beijing pro-democracy protests. In 2021, Lai received a 13-month jail sentence for participating in a banned vigil for the Tiananmen Square massacre.
