A USF-16 fighter aircraft crashes in South Korea during a training exercise
During a training exercise on Monday, a US F-16 fighter jet crashed in South Korea. The pilot successfully executed an emergency escape, and there were no reported casualties. The incident occurred as the jet took off from an air base in Gunsan, approximately 178 kilometers south of Seoul, crashing into the waters of the Yellow Sea. The Yonhap news agency provided this information, and the South Korean defense ministry refrained from commenting. The United States Forces Korea, responsible for American soldiers in the region, was not immediately available for confirmation, as reported by NDTV.
This is not the first occurrence of a US F-16 crash in South Korea; a similar incident happened in May during a routine training exercise in a farmland area south of Seoul. In that case, the pilot ejected safely, and there were no additional casualties.
The United States, with 28,500 troops stationed in South Korea, plays a crucial role as Seoul's primary security ally, particularly in light of the North Korean nuclear threat.
Notably, the US military recently grounded its fleet of V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft in nearby Japan following a crash that resulted in the loss of eight US airmen's lives.
