A man breaches significant security by jumping into the Indian Parliament and setting off a smoking can

In a significant security lapse on the 22nd anniversary of a fatal attack on the complex, a man on Wednesday leaped into the parliamentarians' section of India's Parliament, yelled slogans, and set off a smoke can. While a member was speaking, a young guy in a black jacket and dark pants sprang from the visitors' gallery into the lower house parliamentarians' dining area, leaping over tables and into the aisles. The incident was captured on Parliament TV.

Legislators claimed he was captured in an aisle, surrounded by security personnel, when he ignited a smoke can in his shoes, spewing thick clouds of yellow and white smoke. Authorities claimed that four persons, including the male, had been taken into custody. Rajendra Agarwal, a governing Bharatiya Janata Party legislator presiding over the chamber, told CNN News 18 TV channel, "It all happened in half a minute or one minute." He also mentioned witnessing another individual in the visitors' gallery attempting to jump into the parliamentarians' section. "There is no doubt it was a major security lapse."

Lawmakers reported hearing a noise, seeing smoke, and hearing the intruder yell slogans they could not understand. At the moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not present in Parliament. Attorney Sudip Bandyopadhyay, of the Trinamool Congress party, told the ANI news agency—in which Reuters has a minority stake—"I was expecting maybe they will blast something, shoot somewhere." "There has been a major security breach. How did they get in? They released noises and smoke," he said. Shortly after the event, the lower house adjourned, only to reconvene an hour later. After conducting inquiries, Speaker Om Birla informed the members that the smoke the individual had emitted was "ordinary smoke, just to cause a sensation."

He stated, "Two individuals were taken into custody—two from within the building and two from outside the complex." Neither the administration nor the police issued a comment. The event happened in the brand-new, very secure Parliament building that Modi opened in May. Situated at the epicenter of New Delhi's political center, the Parliament complex is heavily guarded, particularly during sessions.
