With a 1-0 home loss to Bayern Munich, Man United were out of Europe
Manchester United's hopes for a spot in the Champions League last-16 were dashed with a 1-0 defeat against group winners Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday, adding to the woes of Erik ten Hag's struggling team in an already tumultuous season.
Needing a victory against Bayern in their group stage finale and hoping for a draw in Copenhagen's match against Galatasaray, Manchester United's aspirations crumbled as Kingsley Coman scored from close range in the 70th minute for Bayern, who finished the group unbeaten with 16 points. Reflecting on the disappointment, Dutchman Ten Hag conceded, "We didn't make it; we have to accept and learn from it. We made mistakes. Today the performance was very good. We didn't deserve to lose, but we lost the game. In the end, it's not good enough."
Manchester United's fourth-place finish with just four points means they miss even a consolation Europa League playoff berth, and boos echoed as the final whistle blew.
Copenhagen secured a 1-0 win in Denmark, earning eight points and advancing to the Champions League knockout round, while Galatasaray claimed the Europa League playoff spot in third with five points.
Bayern, already having secured the top spot in the group, delighted their away fans, singing "Football's Coming Home" in the closing moments.
Despite the setback, Kane expressed satisfaction with Bayern's control of the game and their ability to exploit quick transitions. Looking ahead, he asserted, "We have enough ability to go far in this competition. That is the ambition, to go and win the Champions League."
Manchester United's Champions League campaign was marred by defensive struggles, conceding 15 goals, the highest by any English team in this year's group stage. The defeat marked the club's sixth time exiting at the group stage and the first since 2020-21, with only the second instance of finishing at the bottom of the group since 2005-06.
Ten Hag's team, with 12 defeats in 24 games across all competitions this season, including a recent 3-0 loss to Bournemouth, sits sixth in the Premier League. Despite the Champions League setback, Ten Hag emphasized the need to carry positive performances into the Premier League and learn from the experience. The night also saw Manchester United losing central defender Harry Maguire to a groin injury in the 40th minute.
