India is constructing a 1,000MW hydropower facility on the Chenab River

India is building the world's first hydroelectric project on Maru Sadar, a right bank tributary of the Chenab River, with a live dam storage capacity of 99,000 acre-feet and the potential to generate 1,000MW of electricity. According to experts, it is faking to have live storage of 88,000 acre-feet with a poor design of spillways, which is a clear breach of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960. The project will be finished in two years. However, Pakistan has previously invoked Article 9 of the Treaty on the project's spillways and free board designs, under paragraph 11 of Annexure-E, over one and a half years ago. "We are keeping an eye on the aforementioned project and have already lodged objections to its design under Article 9." We would raise the matter again with the Indian side in PCIW level negotiations, which may take place before March 2024," a top PCIW (Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters) official stated to The News.
