In adherence to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, aimed at advancing Dubai's infrastructure in line with sustained growth, urban requirements, and seamless traffic flow, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai has granted a contract for the Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project. His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council has overseen this initiative, signaling a commitment to the city's ongoing development. The project, spanning from the intersection with Al Khail Road to the junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, carries a budget of AED332 million.

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, the Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority, emphasized the project's significance in enhancing connectivity between east-west and north-south thoroughfares. Al Tayer highlighted that the project aligns with RTA's continuous efforts to refine the corridor. In a prior initiative in 2013, RTA successfully widened Umm Suqeim Street from the Sheikh Zayed Road intersection to the Al Khail Road intersection, incorporating two three-lane bridges and three pedestrian bridges. Additionally, a bridge was erected on Umm Suqeim Street at the intersection with Dubai Hills and Al Barsha entrances, supporting the Dubai Hills Mall project.

Enhanced Connectivity The Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project spans 4.6 kilometers, connecting Al Khail Road to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. It involves the enhancement of the intersection with Al Barsha South Street, near Kings School, through the construction of an 800-meter-long tunnel featuring four lanes in each direction on Umm Suqeim Street. As part of the project, a signalized surface intersection will also be implemented.

Al Tayer elucidated, "This project is designed to enhance the connectivity of four major traffic corridors in Dubai: Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. It will augment street capacity to accommodate up to 16,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, ensuring smoother traffic flow and significantly reducing travel time between Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road from 9.7 to 3.8 minutes. The project will serve various residential and developmental areas, including Al Barsha South 1, 2, and 3, and Dubai Hills, with an estimated population of about two million people."

Completed Phases The initial phase of the Improvement of Umm Suqeim Street Project was completed in 2013, encompassing the sector between Sheikh Zayed Road and Al Khail Road. This phase included the construction of two three-lane bridges, signalized intersections at Al Asayel Street and First Al Khail Road, and three pedestrian bridges over Umm Suqeim Street. In 2020, RTA inaugurated a central 500-meter bridge as part of the Bridges and Roads leading to the Dubai Hills Mall Project, further contributing to the comprehensive development of Umm Suqeim Street. The bridge, situated at the intersection of Umm Suqeim Street and the entrances of Dubai Hills and Al Barsha areas, boasts four lanes in each direction and a capacity to handle up to 16,000 vehicles per hour.
