Emirates admits that the staff on the Pakistani aircraft reprimanded the rowdy customer.
An unruly passenger on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Islamabad created a disturbance and had to be restrained by the cabin crew. The incident highlights the increasing issue of unruly passengers globally. Emirates is cooperating with authorities, prioritizing the safety of passengers and crew.
An incident involving an unruly passenger took place on an Emirates flight from Dubai to Islamabad, as confirmed by the airline in a statement to Khaleej Times. A video shared on social media captured the disruptive behavior of the passenger, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol. The incident occurred on the EK614 flight, which departed from Dubai on February 24. The Emirates spokesperson stated, "Emirates can confirm that there was an unruly passenger on flight EK614 traveling from Dubai to Islamabad. The passenger was restrained by cabin crew and upon arrival, was handed over to the authorities."
Emirates places the safety of its passengers and crew as its utmost priority and is fully cooperating with the authorities in their investigation. The airline emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals on board and refrained from providing further comments at this time.
The video footage captured the unruly passenger forcefully head-butting a male crew member, which led the crew to quickly subdue him. Another crew member promptly came to assist, and a female cabin crew member provided hand ties to restrain the disruptive individual.
Upon landing in Islamabad, the restrained passenger was safely removed from the aircraft with the assistance of a wheelchair.
This incident sheds light on the growing issue of unruly passengers faced by airlines around the world. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), in July of last year, one in every 568 flights experienced an incident involving an unruly passenger, compared to one in every 835 flights in 2021.
To address such incidents, UAE-based airline crew members undergo specialized training in handling unruly passengers. In May 2023, the country ratified the Montreal Protocol 2014 (MP14), a significant step that strengthens the legal measures to deter and address disruptive and unruly passenger behavior on flights. The ratification empowers the UAE to take jurisdiction over such incidents, regardless of the aircraft's registration.
Emirates remains dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for its passengers and crew members, while also supporting global efforts to address the increasing problem of unruly passenger behavior onboard flights.
