Attackers in the Red Sea target a ship headed for Karachi, Pakistan
Attackers in the Red Sea target a ship headed for Karachi "At this time, there have been no reported injuries among the crew," the shipping business adds.
In a recent incident, a container ship en route from Saudi Arabia to Pakistan came under attack in the Red Sea, with Yemen's Houthi militia claiming responsibility for targeting the vessel. The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company confirmed the attack on one of its Liberia-flagged container ships, 'MSC United,' which was sailing from King Abdullah Port, Saudi Arabia, to Karachi, Pakistan.
The shipping company assured that all crew members were safe, with no reported injuries. A thorough assessment of the vessel is underway, and the company's priority remains the safety of its seafarers. In response to the incident, MSC announced the rerouting of vessels booked for Suez transit via the Cape of Good Hope until the safety of its seafarers can be ensured.
According to MSC, the attacked ship notified a nearby coalition task force warship of the incident and engaged in evasive maneuvers. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that the Yemeni Armed Forces targeted the commercial ship with naval missiles after the crew allegedly refused multiple warnings.
This development follows a series of events where US military forces intercepted over a dozen attack drones and several missiles fired by Houthi rebels at shipping in the Red Sea. The Pentagon reported no damage to ships or injuries during the 10-hour barrage, which included 12 drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles, and two land-attack missiles.
Houthi rebels previously claimed responsibility for a missile strike on a vessel in the Red Sea and a drone attack toward Israel in solidarity with Gaza. The rebels stated that they carried out a targeting operation against the commercial ship, identified as MSC UNITED, and launched drones against military targets in southern Israel. These attacks are part of a series of drone and missile strikes by the rebels since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7. The Houthis assert that they are targeting Israel and Israeli-linked vessels to press for a halt to the offensive in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is engaged in battle with Hamas fighters.
