A large sperm whale that had become entangled in his fishing net was freed by a Pakistani fisherman working in the coastal seas close to Ormara, Balochistan, all by himself. One of the four large whales that may be found in Pakistan is the sperm whale, scientifically known as Physeter microcephalus. while is customary, Malakand-based World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF) trained fisherman Muhammad Shafiullah let down his gillnet and the next morning (Saturday) saw a big whale trapped in the net while it was being lifted. Muhammad Moazzam Khan, the WWF-Pakistan Technical Adviser for Marine Fisheries, reports that the event occurred 16 km south of the Ormara headland along the continental edge at a depth of 296 meters. This region is a part of the Northeast Arabian Sea Important Marine Mammal Area, which was newly designated and is well-known for the wide variety of whale and dolphin species that inhabit it. According to an official statement from the non-governmental organization, WWF-Pakistan installed a sub-surface gillnet that allows dolphins and small whales to pass through without becoming entangled. The sperm whale was believed to be around thirty feet long, therefore it was too big to get through the gillnet.
