Liberal Democrats Reveal Over 200,000 Unsolved Shoplifting Cases in England and Wales"

The Liberal Democrats have analyzed official figures for England and Wales, revealing that more than 200,000 shoplifting cases remained unsolved within 12 months. The party asserts that the government is failing to address a "growing crime epidemic," emphasizing the need for effective measures to combat the issue.

According to the analysis, 205,676 shoplifting cases were closed without identifying a suspect in the year leading up to July. Of the total 362,809 cases, approximately 15% resulted in a suspect being charged or summonsed.

Craig Beaumont, representing the Federation of Small Businesses, expressed concern over the impact on local small and independent businesses. He noted the discouragement felt as under-pressure businesses lose hard-earned money and highlighted the connection between the lack of police investigation and an increase in organized shoplifting incidents.

Chief Constable Amanda Blakeman from the National Police Chiefs' Council acknowledged the damaging impact of retail crime and reiterated the commitment of law enforcement to tackle offenders and support retailers. She emphasized ongoing efforts to address both organized crime and habitual offenders affecting communities and retailers.

Lib Dem home affairs spokesman Alistair Carmichael criticized the Conservative government, stating that organized criminal gangs are evading accountability while leaving shopkeepers vulnerable. Carmichael advocated for a focus on effective crime prevention measures, including increased police presence and thorough investigations.

Responding to the analysis, a Home Office spokeswoman highlighted a nearly one-third increase in charging rates for shoplifting offenses in the past year. She acknowledged shoplifting as a community blight and emphasized the government's commitment to a zero-tolerance approach, signaling the importance of addressing this crime.
