Today's earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.2, strikes Afghanistan
Afghanistan recently experienced a 5.2 magnitude earthquake, as reported by the National Center for Seismology. This incident comes on the heels of a destructive magnitude-6.3 earthquake in October, accompanied by substantial aftershocks, resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives in western Afghanistan, according to the Associated Press. The Taliban administration disclosed that the toll from these tremors surpassed 2,000 fatalities, with over 9,000 individuals sustaining injuries—marking the deadliest seismic activity the quake-prone country has witnessed in years.
The United States Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the magnitude 6.3 quake was situated 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of Herat, the region's largest city. Subsequently, three robust aftershocks were recorded, measuring magnitudes of 6.3, 5.9, and 5.5, along with additional smaller shocks. The Geological Survey previously noted the occurrence of eight aftershocks, ranging between magnitudes 4.3 and 6.3.
