Another coup for a Gulf nation, Expo 2030 will take place in Riyadh, following the World Cup of football hosted by Qatar last year. The cities of Rome in Italy and Busan in South Korea were also vying to host the World's Fair, which takes place once every five years and draws billions of dollars in investment and millions of tourists. Results from 182 members of the Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) indicated on Tuesday that the capital of Saudi Arabia received 119 votes, Busan 29, and Rome 17. For Saudi Arabia to prevail in the first round, two-thirds of the votes have to be cast. The Italian competitors were quite critical of the outcome. Giampiero Massolo, the leader of the Italian candidacy for Expo, told reporters, "This huge result for Saudi was unexpected in those proportions." "Transactions are now the main focus, not merits."
