Queen Margrethe of Denmark announced her decision to formally step down from the throne on January 14, marking 52 years since she ascended to the position. The 83-year-old monarch, the world's only reigning queen and Europe's longest-serving current monarch, disclosed that she would be passing the throne to her son, Crown Prince Frederik.

The decision follows a period of reflection prompted by back surgery in early 2023. Queen Margrethe expressed her gratitude to the Danish public for their support over the years and acknowledged that the time had come to entrust the responsibility to the next generation.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen extended heartfelt thanks to Queen Margrethe for her lifelong dedication and tireless efforts for the Kingdom. The transition will not involve a formal crowning ceremony for the 55-year-old Crown Prince Frederik. Instead, his accession will be announced from Amalienborg Castle in Copenhagen on the appointed day.

Crown Prince Frederik will assume the role of King of Denmark, becoming the head of state in the constitutional monarchy, including Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The popular Queen Margrethe had been expected by many Danes to remain on the throne until her death, making this transition a moment of mixed celebration and sadness.

Affectionately known as Daisy, Queen Margrethe is renowned for her smoking habits and aversion to modern technologies. The Danish royal family, facing challenges similar to other European royal families, has opted to streamline its members. Last year, a public rift occurred when Prince Joachim's children were stripped of their royal titles as part of this downsizing effort.
