Major non-NATO ally and NATO partner is Pakistan, US
The United States has expressed its interest in establishing a partnership with Pakistan regarding regional security and defense cooperation. In response to inquiries from The News regarding the official visit of the Pakistani army chief to the US, the State Department spokesperson refrained from providing specific details about potential meetings.
Nevertheless, the spokesperson emphasized Pakistan's significant role as a "major non-NATO ally and a NATO partner" and conveyed a general eagerness to collaborate on matters of regional security and defense. While the spokesperson did not delve into the specifics of ongoing discussions, the statement highlights a broader commitment to fostering cooperation between the two nations.
In addressing another query, the US State Department acknowledged its vigilance regarding developments in the Indian-administered region of Jammu and Kashmir. This scrutiny follows the recent decision by India's top court to uphold Delhi's controversial revocation of the special status of the state.
The State Department spokesperson stated, "We continue to closely monitor developments in Jammu and Kashmir, taking note of the Supreme Court’s recent ruling." Furthermore, the spokesperson expressed anticipation for additional measures by the Indian government to fulfill its commitments to restore political normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir. This includes the expectation of holding assembly elections, as outlined in the Supreme Court's ruling.
