India has declared its ambition to host the 2036 Olympics, marking its intent to organize the world's premier sporting event. The announcement follows the successful hosting of two significant global events in 2023—the Group of 20 summit and Business 20 meetings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed that hosting the Olympics is an "age-old dream" for the country.

India faces competition from other nations, including Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey, and Poland, who have also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Games. Nita Mukesh Ambani, founder, and chairperson of Reliance Foundation, emphasized India's readiness to host the Olympics, stating that the country is "absolutely ready" for the grand sporting spectacle.

Reliance Industries, India's largest private sector company, forged a partnership with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) last year, aiming to enhance the performance of Indian athletes and position the nation as a global sporting powerhouse. However, past challenges, such as the 2010 Commonwealth Games, have raised concerns about India's ability to successfully host major sporting events.

The Commonwealth Games in 2010 faced issues such as construction delays, budget overruns, and infrastructure challenges, leading to a public relations disaster. The Cricket World Cup held in India earlier this year also drew criticism, with reports of empty seats and logistical issues.

David Carter, an adjunct professor of sports business at the University of Southern California, highlighted that corruption, cost overruns, and controversies have become common in hosting major sporting events. While not directly commenting on India's ability to deliver, Carter emphasized the importance of clear objectives and political will in organizing the Olympics. He noted that understanding the needs of broadcasters, sponsors, and community buy-in is crucial for successful hosting.

The International Olympic Committee President, Thomas Bach, acknowledged the interest from India and commended the country's flourishing sports movement, encompassing a variety of Olympic sports. As India aspires to host the world's largest sporting event, it will face scrutiny and challenges, requiring meticulous planning and execution to overcome past setbacks and deliver a successful Olympics in 2036.
