Four hikers, including a man and three women in their 20s, were struck by lightning on the Three Sisters track at Echo Point in the Blue Mountains. The incident occurred without warning as the group was holding onto a steel handrail. Despite one of the women falling and hitting her head, all four managed to walk back along the path towards Katoomba.

Blue Mountains Mayor Mark Greenhill emphasized the speed at which the storm approached, leaving virtually no time for warnings. He mentioned that weather alerts were raised after the storm had already hit, flooding several council buildings, including the visitor center and headquarters, and causing a power outage in the contact center.

Notably, lightning struck part of the viewing deck at Echo Point, a popular destination visited by approximately 4 million tourists annually. Quick-thinking council staff efficiently evacuated people from the viewing deck and called for an ambulance for two of the hikers struck by lightning.

While Greenhill had limited information on their conditions, he confirmed that they were conscious during transportation to Katoomba Hospital. Expressing concern, he stated, "We've not heard that they're in a dangerous condition, but we are eagerly awaiting news. Our thoughts are with them and their families."

Although this incident was attributed to a freak storm, Greenhill urged caution as more storms were forecasted for the region. He advised visitors to monitor weather apps and stay away from lookouts and weather-prone areas if storm warnings were issued. The emergency services in the Blue Mountains are on alert, emphasizing the importance of staying informed and taking precautions during adverse weather conditions.
