The third edition of the Egypt Defense Expo (Edex), the largest defense exhibition in Africa, took place from December 4 to 7 at the Egypt International Exhibition Centre in Cairo, featuring the participation of the United States Central Command (US Centcom).

Held under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, Edex 2023 provided a platform for the world's leading manufacturers of security and defense systems to showcase the latest advancements in military technology for air, land, and sea forces.

The event, hosting 400 exhibitors from 46 countries, prominently featured American manufacturers and attracted over 35,000 visitors, including top military officials from the Middle East and across the continent. Taking place shortly after the conclusion of the region's largest military exercise, Bright Star 2023, Edex continued to foster robust defense cooperation between the US, Egypt, and more than 30 defense partners. The focus was on enhancing interoperability and integration among the participating militaries.

The significant involvement of US Centcom at Edex underscored the United States' commitment to Middle East security and its interest in bolstering the capabilities of regional defense partners to counter 21st-century hybrid threats. These threats include drones, nuclear, biological, and chemical attacks, as well as improvised explosive devices (IEDs), where the US possesses unparalleled expertise and extensive technological resources. With a defense budget of $816 million, the US also excels in critical military functions such as command and control, communications, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR), and surface and undersea weapon systems.

US Centcom Commander Michael Kurilla emphasized the enduring partnership between the US and Egypt, highlighting the role of Bright Star 2023 in enhancing interoperability. He stated, "The growth of the Bright Star exercise is key to improving the interoperability between US Centcom forces, Egypt's armed forces, and all the other regional forces participating."

John Moore, a senior public affairs official at US Centcom, reiterated the US commitment to deterring threats to stability. He noted the shift in measuring American commitment from the number of soldiers on the ground to standing side by side with allies and partners to defeat and deter malign behavior and critical threats Defense partners at Edex 2023 included Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait.
