"Big Bad Wolf - Sharjah," the largest book sale event in the world, is opened by Bodour
Sheikha Bodour Bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), inaugurated the 'Big Bad Wolf – Sharjah,' the world's largest book sale, in collaboration with Big Bad Wolf Ventures Sdn. Bhd. The event, taking place at the Expo Centre Sharjah from Dec.19 to Jan.7, was launched to promote cultural diversity and enrich Arab culture with knowledge from various sources. The opening ceremony was attended by key figures, including Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, and Andrew Yap, co-founder and managing director of Big Bad Wolf.
During the event, Sheikha Bodour toured the exhibition, meeting with publishers and exhibitors to explore the extensive array of publications on display. Emphasizing the cultural significance of the event, she stated, "Strengthening cultural diversity and enriching Arab culture with knowledge and creative works from different cultures is a central mission of Sharjah's cultural project as well as SBA’s directive."
Under the patronage of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikha Bodour highlighted the emirate's commitment to becoming a cultural hub. The event aims to commemorate intellectual creativity and contribute to the well-being of communities, fostering the exchange of ideas and shared life experiences.
The book sale, covering an area of 4,000 sqm, features over 1 million books across various genres, offered at discounts of up to 85%. Established in 2019 through the partnership between SBA and Big Bad Wolf Ventures Sdn. Bhd., the event supports publishers and enhances reading options in Sharjah, the UAE, and the region.
Ahmed Bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, emphasized the importance of enabling easy access to knowledge, aligning with the vision of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi for Sharjah to serve as a nurturing ground for the Arab cultural project. The event contributes to elevating reading standards globally and revitalizing the book industry on local and global scales. 'Big Bad Wolf' originated in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 2009, and has expanded to 37 cities in 14 countries, including online book sales since 2020.
