Trump hails Russia and opposes US involvement in the war in Ukraine
Former US President Donald Trump praises Russia's military might and shares his views on the Ukraine conflict, sparking debate on foreign policy and aid allocation within the GOP.
Former US President Donald Trump has commended Russia for its historical military strength, referring to it as "a formidable war machine" with a legacy of triumphs against powerful adversaries like Napoleon and Hitler.
Trump, the current frontrunner for the Republican nomination for the presidency, reiterated his belief that had he been in office, the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine would have been averted.
During an appearance on Fox News, the 77-year-old business tycoon expressed sympathy for the situation, stating, "I feel deeply concerned... We must acknowledge that Ukraine is facing a formidable war machine in Russia. This is what they excel at. They've defeated Hitler, they've defeated Napoleon."
Furthermore, Trump emphasized that while Europe bears the direct impact of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the United States remains relatively insulated due to the geographic barrier of the Atlantic Ocean.
He urged greater support from European nations for Kyiv, suggesting that proximity and vested interests should prompt stronger action.
"We have an ocean separating us, but they don't. That's why they haven't contributed as much. It's simply because they haven't been asked," Trump remarked, alluding to debates over foreign aid packages. The US Senate recently passed a $95 billion aid package, including provisions for Ukraine, although its fate in the House of Representatives remains uncertain, complicating efforts to bolster Kyiv's support.
Trump's stance on foreign aid to Ukraine has faced criticism, particularly within his party. He recently took to social media to oppose a border security bill linked to foreign aid, urging Republicans to reject what he called a "Death Wish" for the party. His remarks underscore the divisions within the GOP concerning foreign policy and aid distribution.
