A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the coast of central Japan on New Year's Day, claiming at least 30 lives and causing widespread damage. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida warned that casualties were likely to rise as rescue efforts faced challenges due to damaged roads, hindering authorities' ability to assess the full extent of the fallout.

The quake, centered near the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa prefecture, triggered Japan's first major tsunami warning since the devastating events of March 2011. Kishida described the damage as extensive, with buildings collapsing and fires breaking out. He emphasized the urgency of the rescue operation, calling it a "race against time."

Rescue efforts have been hampered by damaged infrastructure, and authorities have urged people in certain areas to stay away from their homes due to the risk of additional strong quakes. Aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture.

While the initial tsunami warning was later downgraded, the disaster claimed over 20 lives, with 15 reported deaths in the hard-hit town of Wajima. A hospital in Suzu faced power issues as doctors struggled to reach it, relying on a backup generator.

The Japan Meteorological Office reported a total of 155 earthquakes since the initial tremor on Monday. Wajima experienced a tsunami of at least 1.2 meters, causing significant damage and fires. Evacuations took place in the dark, with people leaving their homes, some carrying babies and others wrapped in blankets.

The disaster prompted the cancellation of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako’s New Year’s appearance. Japan's allies, including the United States, expressed concern and readiness to offer assistance. US President Joe Biden conveyed solidarity, stating, "As close allies, the United States and Japan share a deep bond of friendship that unites our people. Our thoughts are with the Japanese people during this difficult time."
