India-bound plane grounded in France over human trafficking finally landed in Mumbai
The Indian Embassy expressed gratitude to the French authorities for expeditiously settling the problem, as the French authorities authorized the plane's departure after two days of interrogation.
Following days of uncertainty and a thorough investigation into suspected human trafficking, an Airbus A340 carrying 276 Indian passengers safely landed in Mumbai after undergoing a series of inquiries and legal considerations in France.
Originally destined for Nicaragua, the Airbus flight, operated by Romania-based Legend Airlines, faced a four-day detention at Vatry airport, east of Paris, due to suspicions of human trafficking raised by an anonymous tip-off. The aircraft, which had departed from Dubai, landed in France where authorities acted on a tip suggesting potential human trafficking among the passengers. Out of the initial 303 passengers, 25, including five minors, sought asylum in France, while two individuals were briefly detained but later released.
Although investigations revealed no concrete evidence of trafficking, the focus shifted to potential violations of immigration laws. After two days of questioning the passengers, French authorities authorized the plane's departure. Despite a French court ruling against further detention for some passengers, the incident generated considerable debate. The Indian Embassy expressed appreciation for the swift resolution by French officials.
The passengers were likely workers from the United Arab Emirates intending to use Nicaragua as a gateway to the United States or Canada. The small fleet of Legend Airlines, comprising just four planes, was implicated in this incident.
The plane's detention prompted extraordinary measures at Vatry airport, with passengers confined while authorities transformed the terminal into a makeshift courtroom for emergency hearings. Beds, toilets, and showers were installed for the passengers during the investigation. While no evidence of trafficking surfaced, French authorities continue to scrutinize potential breaches of immigration laws. The incident raised concerns among some organizations about the possibility of overlooking genuine trafficking victims.
The aircraft's landing in Mumbai marked the conclusion of this episode, highlighting a tense period where suspicions of human trafficking transitioned into scrutiny of immigration laws. French authorities maintain ongoing investigations into the matter.
