Dubai Customs Foils Marijuana Smuggling Attempt Disguised as Red Onion Shipments
Dubai Customs intercepts 26.45kg of marijuana cunningly hidden within shipments of red onions, unveiling a sophisticated smuggling attempt. Discover how meticulous inspection and collaboration with Dubai Police thwarted the illicit operation.
Dubai Customs announced a significant interception on Wednesday, seizing a total of 26.45kg of marijuana concealed within shipments of red onions. The operation involved meticulous scrutiny of two separate air freight consignments originating from an African country, resulting in the confiscation of 14.85kg and 11.6kg of the illicit substance, respectively.
The suspicion arose upon the arrival of the initial air freight shipment in Dubai, as officials noticed discrepancies in the declared contents of the packages labeled as 'red onions.' A comprehensive inspection, employing advanced X-ray detection technology, uncovered irregularities in the images, ultimately leading to the discovery of 14.85kg of marijuana hidden within the shipment.
Following this discovery, another shipment from the same African country, bearing a similar description of goods (red onion bags) but under different exporter names, underwent a thorough examination. Subsequent X-ray inspection revealed an additional 11.6kg of marijuana concealed within the seemingly innocent cargo.
Collaborating closely with the Dubai Police, Dubai Customs managed the handling and documentation of the intercepted shipments and seized substances.
