At COP28, at least 60 nations will join the Global Cooling Pledge
According to Reuters, which cited US State Department officials at the UN climate meeting in Dubai, at least 60 nations—including the US—will support a commitment on Tuesday to reduce cooling-related emissions by 2050. With the Global Cooling Pledge, energy emissions from the cooling industry would receive global attention for the first time. It demands that nations cut their cooling-related emissions by a minimum of 68% by 2050 as compared to 2022 levels. Given that the cooling sector is only anticipated to increase as temperatures rise, this is a difficult challenge. The energy required for cooling might triple by 2050, with refrigerant and cooling-related emissions making up about 7% of greenhouse gas emissions.
